Paul Steiger, Editor and CEO

Paul Steiger is the editor-in-chief, president and chief executive of ProPublica, the non-profit investigative newsroom based in New York. In 2008, ProPublica pioneered a new model for investigative journalism, producing stories for The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, NPR, and many others, on topics including police corruption, the financial bailout, natural gas drilling, and private military contractors. ProPublica’s mission is to produce investigative journalism in the public interest. Prior to ProPublica, Mr. Steiger was the managing editor of the Wall Street Journal from 1991 until May 2007. Under his leadership, The Wall Street Journal's reporters and editors won 16 Pulitzer Prizes. Mr. Steiger is also the chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists and a trustee of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In 2008, Mr. Steiger received the Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from Harvard University's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.
