State of the News Media

Tom Rosenstiel, Director and author

Mr. Rosenstiel is the director of the Pew Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, and the author of the annual State of the News Media report. He has worked as a journalist for more than 30 years, as media critic for the Los Angeles Times, and chief congressional correspondent for Newsweek magazine. He is vice chairman of the Committee of Concerned Journalists, an initiative engaged in conducting a national conversation among journalists about standards and values, which he co-founded and formerly managed. At PEJ, he is the editor and principal author of the Project's annual report on the State of the News Media, the most  comprehensive study on the trends and challenges in American journalism, now in its seventh year.

On April 6, 2010, Samara and Massey College hosted a special appearance by Mr. Rosenstiel, where he presented findings from his 2010 report. A written summary of the Samara event is available here, and a summary of Rosenstiel's 8 roles for journalism in the 21st century is available here.
