Nominator: Mayor Don Iveson

City: Edmonton

Andrew has shown himself to be a leader both on and off the ice.  As a homegrown product, it was great to see him come back to Captain the Oilers and step immediately into leadership, promoting physical fitness and community building by bringing the November Project to Edmonton.  Shortly after I was elected Mayor, Andrew connected with my office to see how he might also help promote sustainability projects in the city, and since then has helped promote many municipal green initiatives to audiences that may traditionally not have heard about such environmental issues. In the same vein, through the NHL Players Association he created and championed a carbon-neutral program which has over 500 NHL players purchase carbon credits to offset the environmental impact of a travel-heavy professional athlete lifestyle.
