Become a Parliamentary Legislative Intern in 2013!

by Jane Hilderman

Are you ready to be up close and personal with politics and policy making? Are you ready for the experience of a lifetime? Apply for one of many internship opportunities available to young Canadians, but keep in mind the deadlines are fast approaching in for several programs.

It's also worth noting that each program has slightly different application requirements. Many programs also contain a research component, as well as study tours to other jurisdictions in Canada and/or abroad. The good news is that most provide a stipend to interns, or offer a university credit.

Parliamentary Internship Programme: Spend 10 months working for a backbench MP from both the government and opposition on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Deadline to apply is January 31, 2013.

Jaimie Anderson Parliamentary Internship Program: Spend your summer (May - September) working for an MP on Parliament Hill. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2013.

Programme de Stages du Fondation Jean-Charles-Bonenfant: Spend 10 months working for two MNAs from both the government and opposition in the l’Assemblée nationale du Québec in Québec City. Deadline to apply is February 15, 2013.

Ontario Legislative Internship Programme: Spend 10 months working in Toronto with MPPs from both government and opposition at the Ontario Legislature. Deadline to apply is February 28, 2013.

Manitoba Legislature – Internship Program: Spend 10 months working inside a party caucus in the Manitoba capital of Winnipeg. Deadline is February 14, 2013.

Saskatchewan Legislative Internship Program: Spend 6 months working for MLAs, splitting time with both government and opposition. Deadline for 2013/14 has passed, but it might be worthwhile finding out when the next round opens.

B.C. Legislative Internship Program: Commencing in January, spend 6 months working inside a party caucus in Victoria. Deadline for the 2014 internship is January 31, 2013.

If we missed a provincial legislature internship program, let us know! Alberta, the Atlantic provinces and territorial legislatures are all missing out on a great opportunity to open up the political system to motivated young Canadians.
