Are you being served? - Samara's April Newsletter

Are you being served?

Last night, inspired by Samara’s "Lost in Translation or Just Lost?" report, TVO's The Agenda with Steve Paikin brought Executive Director Alison Loat, Maclean's magazine's Aaron Wherry, NDP House Leader Nathan Cullen, Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett and Conservative MP Brent Rathgeber, together to consider the question, "are you being served?"

Many Canadians feel their interests aren't being adequately served in Parliament. From a rebellion on the backbenches, to efforts to civilize and modernize representation, this discussion looked at how Parliament works and how MPs can help it work better.

Samara Notebook

To keep our readers updated on our progress, Alison has started a new blog series called "Samara Notebook," where she'll highlight what the team has been up to in the past month. Some highlights from March:

  • The team made two presentation to Elections Canada, one on the findings of Democracy Talks  and one on youth engagement in political parties.
  • Alison traveled to BC to present at two conferences and launch a BC-based series of Democracy Talks events partnered with Simon Fraser University’s Public Square.
  • Alison spoke on a panel called "The engagement imperative" at DiverseCity's CollaborAction event.

  • An interactive analysis of which MPs talked the most and the least in the House of Commons;
  • The Democracy Talks’ Ontario pilot wraps up, and sessions continue in BC;
  • We’re sharing the great ideas we hear at Democracy Talks in a new blog series;
  • We weigh in on the controversy of MP free speech in the House;
  • Alison and Michael continue to turn Samara’s MP Exit Interviews into a book; and
  • Our next Democracy Report on citizens is in the works and set to be released early in the summer.
