The 5th annual EPC contest has begun!

You know that everyday political citizenship matters.

We do too. That's why Samara is excited to launch the fifth annual Everyday Political Citizen (EPC) contest, which highlights Canadians who engage with their communities to create a stronger more inclusive democracy.

Last year, hundreds of political role models were nominated from across the country, including EPC Winner Ruth who was recently elected president of the National Inuit Youth Council.

Now, Samara wants to hear about the inspiring and hardworking EPCitizens in your life. Who do you know working to make positive change at the local, regional or national level, and whose efforts rarely receive, yet greatly deserve recognition?

  • You can nominate today at
  • The deadline to submit a nomination is October 19th, 2017
  • The winners' stories receive national media attention
  • Every nomination will be profiled on Samara's blog and social media
  • Anyone living in Canada can be nominated, regardless of age, background or legal status

An esteemed jury will review the nominations and select a shortlist, followed by winners in three age categories: Under 18, 18-29 and 30+.

This year's jury includes prominent Canadians such as political satirist Rick Mercer, director and writer Buffy Childerhose, Senator André Pratte, and columnist and activist Desmond Cole, as well as last year's winners.

"There is something tremendously powerful when we see ourselves represented in role models who are actively engaged and politicized.” – Artist-Activist and EPC Juror Jen Sung

Not sure who to nominate? Get inspired by reading about past nominees and winners.

With your help, Samara looks forward to expanding the community of over 1,000 EPCitizens already honoured by the contest. Together, we can showcase the unsung heroes of our democracy, working tirelessly to make their communities and our country a better place.

Follow the contest on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter or using #EPCitizen, and share this blog post with anyone you think may want to nominate an EPCitizen!

Everyday Political Citizen is made possible by the generous support of our donors and sponsors. We would like to thank lead sponsor Bennett Jones, as well as iPolitics and Twitter for their in-kind support. We're also pleased to announce Institut du Nouveau Monde as this year's EPC partner.
