In 2017, Samara...

Strengthened democracy at home and abroad by delivering innovative research and insights:

Inspired active citizenship by showing Canadians the many ways they can engage in our democracy:

Redefined political leadership by bringing together a range of different leaders:

In the midst of all of this activity, we also welcomed three new faces to our team: Research Director Mike Morden, Everyday Political Citizen Coordinator Sameen Zehra and Executive Assistant Rosemary McManus.

Looking ahead to 2018...

  • We're revving up to host Wonk Prom once again—this time at Steam Whistle brewery in Toronto on April 12th. Get your early bird tickets now and come celebrate politics, policy and the people who make it happen!
  • We'll continue developing original programming for public leaders and active citizens to drive change in Canada's democracy!
  • In an effort to showcase the full diversity of political engagement, we're launching a new digital storytelling project for Canadians to share their stories and amplify their voices across the country, providing inspiration for others!
  • To expand programs created by Samara in order to help more Canadians discover and develop their political voice, both Democracy Talks and Vote PopUp are moving to a new home at Ryerson University's Democratic Engagement Exchange—public launch coming soon!
  • After speaking with over 50 former MPs and recording over 100 hours of audio for our second round of MP Exit Interviews, we're putting out a series of reports based on this innovative research. Look for the first report to come out in late March!
  • Can youth councils help young people participate in governance? What effect are these councils having on youth? These are the questions we'll be trying to answer by speaking to members of youth councils across the country. Their experiences and insights will shape the creation of a guide to youth councils and best practices!

appy holidays from the team at Samara!
