Kendall Anderson Becomes New Executive Director of the Samara Centre

We're pleased to announce that Kendall Anderson is our new Executive Director here at the Samara Centre! Our co-founder, Michael MacMillan, pens a letter to say farewell to Jane Hilderman as former Executive Director, and welcome Kendall as the new leader of the organization.

To Friends of the Samara Centre for Democracy,

I am writing to share some important news about changes in leadership at Samara.

The Samara Centre’s Executive Director, Jane Hilderman, has made the difficult decision to step down as Executive Director and start a new chapter in Winnipeg to be with her new family. Jane has been with the Samara Centre for Democracy for eight years, the last three of them as Executive Director. Jane joined us as a Research Analyst, but with her deep parliamentary knowledge and dynamic leadership abilities, she quickly rose in the organization to become Research Director and then Executive Director. Under her leadership, the Samara Centre has become known for its depth and breadth of research into Parliament’s inner workings and Canadians’ experiences with democracy.

When she informed us of her decision, I am pleased to let you know that my fellow Board Members and I knew who to ask to take on this exciting opportunity. The Board and I are thrilled to announce that, as of today, Kendall Anderson will take charge as the Samara Centre’s third Executive Director.

Kendall has been with the Samara Centre for eight years and, coming as she does from a communications background, she has shaped the Centre’s engaging content and research, striving always to make politics more meaningful and approachable for Canadians. A talented storyteller, Kendall is able to articulate democratic reforms and other creative solutions to the problems in our politics. For the last three years, she has been the Managing Director, working closely with Jane, where she oversaw all of the Centre’s programming and research. Additionally, she has served as Samara’s Acting Executive Director since Jane went on parental leave in February.

In her parting essay, Jane shared, “I’m tremendously delighted that she is the Samara Centre’s next Executive Director, for I have observed the depths of her creativity, diligence and respect for the people and the mission of Samara in action. The Samara Centre for Democracy will only pick up speed under Kendall’s leadership.”

Indeed, the Board, the staff and I are incredibly excited that the Centre will continue to conduct its vital research and original engagement programming under Kendall’s creative and thoughtful leadership.

I encourage you to read her op-ed in today’s Hill Times where she advocates for Parliament to take the threats to democracy seriously and reinvigorate democracy now.
