Real House Lives is now available!

The Samara Centre is thrilled to announce the release of Real House Lives: Former Members of Parliament on How to Reclaim Democratic Leadership, a new book based on our latest round of MP exit interviews, and the sequel to our #1 bestseller Tragedy in the Commons.

Real House Lives uses the stories and experiences of past parliamentarians to understand what’s going wrong with our national politics. Laying out a vision of democratic representation that is independent, thoughtful, engaged, and empowered, the book traces a path toward a stronger Parliament, better local democratic engagement, and healthier parties.

Bringing together our second volume of MP exit interview reports, as well as a brand new foreword, introduction, and conclusion, this book is for anyone who has ever imagined offering their career and life to public service. It’s a how-to guide, an inspirational account, and perhaps a warning.

Providing invaluable insight, our interviews with over 130 former MPs from across the country and the political spectrum have greatly informed our recommendations to improve Canadian democracy.

To make our vision of democratic representation a reality, we have sent copies of Real House Lives to every Member of the 43rd Parliament. But we need your help!

After reading the book:

  • Leave a review on Amazon or your preferred online bookseller
  • Add Real House Lives to your book club’s reading list
  • Post a short response and picture of the book on social media, and be sure to mention @SamaraCDA and #RealHouseLives

To mark the release of Real House Lives, we’re travelling across the country and bringing together former MPs to hear about their experiences in office and to explore our vision for democratic leadership. First up: Toronto.

Our national tour kicks off on March 10th with the official launch at The Royal Cinema. This event will feature a live “exit interview” with former MPs Peggy Nash, Robert-Falcon Ouellette, and the Honourable Lisa Raitt, followed by a reception, where snacks, refreshments, and copies of Real House Lives will be available. Find out more and RSVP here.

Can't make it to our launch in Toronto? Keep an eye on our Events page, where we’ll soon be announcing additional tour stops.

Happy reading!
