Virtual Parliaments webinar feat. Cristina Leston-Bandeira and Paul E.J. Thomas

On April 23rd, the Samara Centre for Democracy brought together Dr. Cristina Leston-Bandeira, from the United Kingdom, and our very own Dr. Paul EJ Thomas, from his home in Ottawa, for an insightful and timely webinar on virtual parliaments.

In the wake of the the coronavirus outbreak, their discussion focused on how parliaments in Canada and the UK are adapting to the pandemic by moving to virtual platforms and spaces. Among other things, Cristina and Paul spoke about the barriers to implementing digital technologies, the challenges to parliamentary oversight and scrutiny, and the advantages of different models of virtual parliaments.

Cristina is professor of politics at the University of Leeds, specializing in parliament and public engagement. Paul is Senior Research Associate at the Samara Centre and adjunct professor at Carleton University.
