At the Samara Centre, the new year brings renewed commitment, energy, and leadership. As Canadians look on at recent events in Georgia and Washington, DC, and Canada’s public leaders and institutions continue to navigate the pandemic, our work to defend and strengthen democracy is more urgent than ever. Turning to the months ahead, we have a few important updates we would like to share with you.

First, we are excited to announce that we will soon be launching a search for the Samara Centre’s next Executive Director. The chosen candidate will spearhead our mission to make Canadian politics more accessible, responsive, and inclusive, injecting fresh insight and perspective into our work. Led by Board Member Chad Rogers, the Search Committee is in the midst of retaining an executive search firm and details of the search process will be announced shortly. We would like to attract a diverse range of talented candidates, and invite you to help us spread the word far and wide!

Second, our Acting Executive Director and Research Director, Mike Morden, will be leaving the organization later this month to pursue an invaluable opportunity at Queen's Park. After joining the Samara Centre in 2017, Mike has been instrumental in advancing our rigorous research agenda and ongoing push for democratic reform. We thank him for his original thinking, relentless dedication, and steadfast leadership, and wish him the best of luck as he returns to public service, joining the team at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Help us bid Mike farewell by sending him an email.

Lastly, we are thrilled to welcome Janet Yale as our Interim Executive Director. After years of senior leadership in the private, public, and not-for-profit worlds, Janet has served as Vice Chair of the Samara Centre’s Board of Directors since 2015. A lawyer and economist, Janet is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, among several other distinctions. Learn more about her distinguished career and accomplishments on our website.

The Samara Centre remains committed to providing a strong voice for democracy in the years to come. As we embark on our search for renewed leadership, we look forward to writing a new chapter in our organization’s history and building on all that we have accomplished together.
