2017 EPC Nominee: Alia Youssef

Alia EPC

Alia Youssef of GTA, ON, was nominated by Arezoo Najibzadeh

Alia Youssef is redefining civic leadership one shot at a time. Alia is an emerging photographer based in Toronto who is using her skills to bring attention to some of the most marginalized members of our society.

Her photography series named “The Sisters Project” investigates Muslim women’s representations in the media, and counters the idea that they can be painted with one brush by humanizing and diversifying the narratives of Muslim women.

Within the past two years, Alia has managed to create a community of diverse and strong Muslim women leaders who work in a variety of fields; and has inspired young Muslim women and girls to dream big.

In a world where Muslim women’s bodies are a used as a battleground for ideological and religious debate, Alia has created a safe space where Muslim women can celebrate who they are.
